Lily Hope

  • Tlingit, Raven, T’aḵdeintaan, Snail House
  • Juneau, Alaska
  • Category: Weaving: Chilkat Inspired
  • Thigh-spun merino wool and cedar bark, merino weft yarns, ermine fur
  • Artist comment: “Taku Sunrise” is a Chilkat weaving. Original design abstract landscape looking south down the Gastineau Channel from Juneau, Alaska.

Juror comment: A unique and powerful adaptation of the technique to jewelry.  An instant classic design made possible by total immersion in life, art, and design. The elegant simplicity is simultaneously ancient and modern. Technically, with the tiny material, they are wonderful and clearly made by accomplished hands. My respects to the spinner. Thigh-spun (wool) using cedar is becoming pretty rare in our pieces today.
